Mat Yoga

Choosing the Right Yoga Mat
Yoga requires having the right tools, one of which is the yoga mat. Without those tools you can still do yoga but as any yoga instructor will tell you the better you learn to use many of those tools the more it will enhance your yoga practice. From blocks that can allow you to attain a pose more effectively to mats that offer things such as stability and extra cushioning, the tools you choose will allow you to get the most from your yoga practice.
Mats are one of the most important parts of your yoga practice and offer much more than something between you and the floor. Choosing the right mat can not only offer you comfort but it can also offer you a great deal more such as safety from slipping. There are different types of mats that are designed to suite a number of different needs and experience levels. It is important to know what your needs will be when looking for a mat, if you are unclear take the time to research the topic or speak to your instructor to determine what you might need.
There are many different types of yoga mats, made from different materials, different sizes and with different surfaces. This is to accommodate the different purposes that each mat is designed for, if you are in a class or are a beginner the normal sized rectangle mat will be fine for you, be sure however to look over the different types to see which one would best suit your needs.
Economy mats are probably fine for the beginner; your poses at this point will not be quite so intense or last as long and the need for anything else will not come until later. As you begin to progress you may find that you would like to have a different type of mat, deeper or more difficult poses leave you with the need for more traction and padding to ensure security and comfort.
Many mats are made with a surface that will keep you from slipping even if your feet become sweaty. This not only enhances your yoga allowing you to focus on your pose and not your balance but it also increase your safety since slipping or losing your balance in a difficult pose can lead to you hurting yourself.
Finding a mat with a thicker padding can be useful as well, it provides more grip but it also provides more cushion if you are practicing on a hard floor. For those with arthritis or other joint problems a thicker mat can help you stay in a pose longer and more comfortably. You can even find a mat that offers a gel layer that will offer a reduced impact on those key stress points.
Another important consideration in a yoga mat is how environmentally friendly it is and how comfortable the material is. Keep in mind that you will by laying on the mat during your practice so it needs to feel good on the skin, there are mats that are made out of more materials than you can possibly imagine and this does include natural fibers as well. Natural fibers tend to feel better on the skin, but many of the synthetic materials offer more padding, if you want both padding and comfort you may wish to consider a thick yoga mat with a yoga rug on top of it.
Many people are concerned about how environmentally friendly their tools for yoga are, so this is something you should keep in mind. Natural fibers are of course environmentally friendly and biodegradable, while synthetic materials should be recyclable.
